The Riksmuseum catalogue describes the subject as The Blessed Virgin Mary reading a book, St Anne holding a rope (to rock the cradle from side to side?), the Christ Child asleep in the cradle, and St Joseph working under the stairs on the left of the painting (on the right of the print)
