About this work

Physical description

1 print : halftone ; image 12 x 10.2 cm

Lettering

A medicine-man, Maiduguri. The medicine-man has to wear numerous charms not only to make certain that he possesses magical powers, but also to advertise the fact that he depends upon them, some of which he sells to customers at a high price. The clothes of the man above are almost concealed by the number of his amulets, while a leopard-skin does duty as a hat. By the courtesy of Mrs. C.L. Temple.

Creator/production credits

Part of the same photograph was reproduced (uncredited) in Chiefs and cities of Central Africa by Olive Macleod (Temple), Edinburgh 1912, facing p. 246, from which it is inferred that she, Olive Susan Miranda Temple, Mrs C.L. Temple (1886-1936), was the photographer, rather than her husband, Charles Lindsay Temple (1871-1929)
