About this work

Description

Described in an anonymous poem Music's mishap printed in The keepsake for 1828, pp. 76-79. The violinist is the parish clerk and village music-master. He tries to teach the Sunday school choir of girls to sing in time and in tune, but they do not. His wife stands patiently next to him. The master's motion with arms and foot causes the chair to hit the dog's tail, resulting in a howl which makes the musician fall off his chair
