About this work

Description

The round cucurbite with the moorshead helmet stands on an open fire on top of the stove. This may be due to ignorance on the part of the artist, or a sign for the fact that here the alchemist is a 'puffer'

A fish hangs from the ceiling

The dedicatee 'Jacques Jean Comte de Wassenaer Seigneur d'Obdam, chevalier du Sainte Empire Romain' was Jan Jacob van Wassenaer (1724-1779), the eldest son of Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer Obdam (1692-1766). Unico Wilhelm was a musician, ambassador of the Dutch Republic in Cologne, and knight of the Teutonic Order (Utrecht chapter). He and Jan Jacob were co-authors of a comic opera "Vertu vaut bien noblesse" (De deugd is den adel waerdig), based on Belle van Zuylen's 'Le noble, conte moral' (1763): the opera was first performed in the Hague in 1769. Jan Jacob was described as "frivool en libertijns, volgens Belle van Zuylen ook een man van geest". Le Bas dedicated another print to him, of the fish market on the beach at Scheveningen, after 'Adriaen Vandrever' (Aert van der Neer?), in 1748 (www.wassenaer.net, 'Stamboom')
