About this work

Description

Identified by Bartsch as depicting Venus playing dice with Cupid for the liberty and hearts of human beings. Cumberland apparently identified the central figure as Medea

Lettering

Lettering in pencil on mount: "Medea performing incantations. So described by Cumberland pa. 395 of his Crit. Catal. who says it has twenty-four lines of poetry underneath. The design of this print is attributed by some to B. Bandinelli. See the Peintre Graveur, Vol. XV. p. 54. no. X of Annonymous Engravers of the School of Marc Antonio, No. II"
