Biographical note

Hunter, John (1728-1793), was a surgeon and anatomist, born near Glasgow. He moved to London in 1748 to assist his brother William Hunter (1718-1783), who was a teacher of anatomy and an accoucheur. Hunter served with the army in Portugal in 1762. The army offered the formal qualification needed for surgical practice. Hunter then developed an interest in natural history and comparative anatomy. Hunter became a successful surgeon and collected dried specimens. The Hunterian Museum was set up to house his collections. Hunter died in 1793 from heart disease. A full description of his life and work is to be found in the Dictionary of National Biography.
