Biographical note

In the lower margin of the verso of the last leaf is a note by a leter 15th century hand: 'Iste liber fuit quondam domini Iohannis de monheim bone memorie'. The vellum cover is from part of a Papal Letter from 'Johannes episcopus servus servorum' addressed to 'Hedenrico Preposito' of a Church the name of which is wanting. It was probnably at Toulouse, as in line 3 that city is mentioned, and its 'Domus hospitalis sancti Iohannis Ierosoli-mitani'. The letter is dated from Avignon, but the date itself and the signature are missing. It is most probable that the Pope named is John XXII, who was elected Pope at Avignon in 1316 and died in 1334 at the age of ninety. A reference in 'Gallia Christiana' Vol. XIII for the Toulouse Diocese mentions correspondence with the Knights of St. John in 1324.
