About this work

Description

Photograph album containing 74 portrait photographs of members of the Club, presented to the Club between 1851 and c. 1908.

The Club began to collect 'graphic representations' of members in 1828. Photographs were collected subsequently, the earliest to survive being that of George David Pollock, presented to the Club in 1851 (see MS. 6210, f. 101). Portrait photographs presented during the 1850s also include those of Lionel Smith Beale, Robert Temple Frere, James Lane, George Lawson, Edward Henry Sieveking, Henry Thompson and William Wadham; later photographs include those of Robert Liveing, [Thomas] Harrington Tuke, Sir Thomas Watson and Sir Hermann Weber.

The album itself dates from c. 1900; pencilled notes identifying sitters and dates of election to membership may have been copied from an earlier album.
