About this work

Description

Tobit and Anna were the parents of Tobias who is shown here at the moment when he is saving the sight of his father with the help of the Archangel Raphael. Tobit had been reduced to poverty by God as a test, and Anna supported him with her spinning wheel. The story was considered to be an example of piety in adversity

Another painting incorporating the present composition was placed on loan from the Dienst voor 's Rijks Verspreide Kunstvoorwerpen in 1989 to the Museum Catharijneconvent, Utrecht. It had previously been attributed to Karel van der Pluym, Gerbrand van den Eeckhout and Govaert Flinck. Remains of a possible signature of G.W. Horst have been discerned (J. Dijkstra, loc. cit.), as a result of which he is currently regarded as the painter of the Utrecht version and the inventor of the Wellcome version
