About this work

Description

Postcard showing bearded lady Madame Delait with her St. Bernard dog standing against a wall covered in creeper. She is wearing a long dress with frills below the knee and lace borders, a bonnet and is carrying a parasol in her right hand. The message on this card is dated 10 February 1918 and mentions World War 1 in the Vosges. The postal cancellation mark while unclear appears to be her own personal one - Mme. Delait / Thaon-les-Vosges and the date in a circle. The card would have been sold as a souvenir (exigez le cachet de Mme Delait) at her café, 'La Femme à Barbe', in Thaon-les-Vosges. She worked for the Red Cross during World War 1 (this is mentioned in the message written on the reverse of the card) and went on an international tour in 1928 meeting royalty and heads of state.
