About this work

Description

Collection of medical receipts and prescriptions. Pp. 31/2, 41-48, 59-83, and some leaves at the end have been torn out. The pagination starts from the end of the volume. The receipts are in Latin and English, and the compiler seems to have been a physician. Pp. 91-84 contain 'Directions for preparing and administering Mrs. Stephen's Medicine for the stone in a solid form'. At the end 'D. Hartley. Feb. 10. 1745/46'. 'D. Hartley' is David Hartley the elder [1705-1757], a physician of Newark and London who was an enthusiastic supporter of Mrs. Stephen's Medicine. [See the Dictionary of National Biography]. This section is written by a different hand. Pp. 119-122 contain 'A full discovery of the Medicines given by me Joanna Stephens, for the cure of the Stone and Gravel'. This is written by the hand of the main compiler of the MS.
