Description

Receipt book containing medical and cookery receipts, by several hands, mostly of the second half of the 18th cent. There are a number of receipts, etc. pasted in or inserted loose, many of the early 19th cent. Among these is one franked by Charles Brietzcke [1738-1795]. An added section is on paper water-marked 1805.

Biographical note

This collection seems to have been originally compiled by Esther Hanmer, the 'E.H.' of p. 129 of the second pagination. She married William Hanmer, and her maiden name was Jennens. Her daughter, also Esther, married Assheton Curzon, 1st Viscount Curzon [1730-1820]. She was grand-daughter of Sir Robert Burdett who had married Mary Pigott ('Grandmama Pigott' p. 57). A receipt for William Hanmer dated 1754, has been pasted in towards the end of the volume.
