About this work

Description

Collection of cookery receipts by Martha Hodges, Robert Foster and others.

Written by various hands; including a few medical receipts, and used also as a commonplace book for religious extracts, poems, etc.

A note on the first leaf reads 'Our Great Grandmother Hodges her receipt book. She was mother to Mrs. Priaulx who was the Grandmother of Mrs. Sarah Tilley by Mrs. Howes marrying her daughter Mrs. Mary Priaulx. Her name is written by herself at the other end. She was sister of Dr. Hodges the writer of a large book of receipts'. At the 'other end' of the volume is the name 'Martha Hodges' (twice), and 'Robert Foster writ this book'. The name 'Hanna Hollcroft' is written on the leather margin of the lower cover.

The 'Dr. Hodges' referred to in this inscription is possibly the famous Nathaniel Hodges [1629-1688], of Plague fame, though he is not recorded as having written any 'large book of receipts'.
