About this work

Also known as

Previous title, replaced May 2022: Lyell Johnson & Fred Groome, music hall performers, one in drag, pose as a bride and a clergyman. Photographic postcard, 191-.

Description

Professionally produced publicity card for Lyell Johnson and Fred Groome, circa 1910. An obscure comedy duo, one of the many thousands of variety acts who toured the music halls at the beginning of the twentieth century, when the only entertainment was live. A popular seaside resort near to London such as Southend would have had dozens of music halls and theatres at this time, and by the early years of the twentieth century, drag acts of one sort or another had become standard entertainment. They are posed here dressed as a bride and clergyman, looking in the direction of the viewer.
