About this work

Description

Willie, later known as Billie, Manders in drag is dressed in a copy of the costume worn by musical comedy star Gertie Millar in 'A Quaker girl', which opened in London in 1910. He is smiling at Terry who is wearing a summer suit. Manders was a popular Rhyl-based female impersonator: he and his troupe 'The Quaintesques' were concert party entertainers from the early 1920's right up to World War II. Billie was a performer from a very early age and a a pioneer of 'glamour drag', presenting a less exaggerated female appearance.
