About this work

Description

This is not a comprehensive collection of the many publications about the Retreat during its long history. The publications listed here were all produced for a particular publicity purpose: some were officially issued by the Retreat to publicise its work - this includes Samuel Tuke's famous Description of 1813 and various later prospectuses and publicity material - while others were written by Retreat staff in order to describe the care offered by the Retreat. Some were written for the Quaker audience of supporters to publicise progress or change, and others were published for the wider public in order to make a particular statement. What they have in common is that they all contain some contemporary information about the Retreat, making them useful as primary printed sources Also included here are newspaper cuttings about the Retreat
